Painting Your Home's Exterior? 3 Things You Need To Do

Posted on

Before you take on the project of painting your home's exterior, there is some preparation work that you need to do, or your hard work isn't going to pan out how you wanted it. Preparation is key when painting your home's exterior. Without it, you could end up with stains that soak through your paint, or your paint may not adhere as you want it to. Before you tackle the job of painting the exterior of your home, read on for some of the things you should do beforehand.

1. Clean Your Siding

No matter what type of siding you have, the one thing you need to do is to clean the siding beforehand. If you don't clean your siding thoroughly, you'll end up with stains that will soak through, or the paint will not adhere properly, could bubble, and may peel. You need to take the time and not skip this step in your prep work before you paint your home. Clean the siding with a siding cleaner that is safe for your type of siding, then be sure to rinse it thoroughly. If you have stains from algae or mildew growth, you should be sure to scrub these areas as much as you can to remove the stains.

2. Apply Paint With Primer

Apply paint that has primer in it to help cover the stains and other marks on your home that you don't want soaking through. If you prefer to give it a nice coat of primer beforehand, you can paint your home with primer first and then paint it with whatever coat of paint you prefer to give your home an even amount of coverage and protection.

3. Paint Using The Right Tools

Make sure you have the right tools to get this job done. If you have a taller home, you're going to need scaffolding. Don't just attempt to use a small ladder or an extension pole. You'll need to get up high to reach the siding and to do a thorough job. Use a good roller and paintbrushes to get this job done as well. Using cheap tools may give you a look that you weren't looking for.

If the exterior of your home is lacking in appearance, a coat of paint may be what you need. If you're going to do the work yourself, be sure to do a thorough job and do all of the prep work it requires. Hire a professional painter to do all of this work for you.
